Sister Julianne Scherschel, OSB, 1914-1996

Sister Julianne Scherschel, 82, of St. Mary Monastery, Nauvoo, Illinois, died Tuesday, November 19, 1996 at St. Mary Monastery in Nauvoo.

She was born January 29, 1914 in Hampton, Illinois to James William Scherschel and Emma (Huber) Scherschel.  Sister Julianne entered the Benedictine Community September 27, 1932 and made her final profession as a Benedictine Sister July, 1937.  She attended St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa and St. Mary College, Xavier, Kansas.  She taught at St. Boniface School, Peoria; St. Joseph School, Ivesdale; St. Thomas More, Munster, Indiana; St. Columba, Chicago; St. Peter and Paul, Nauvoo; Holy Family, Peoria and Assumption School, Jacksonville, Florida.  She was Office Clerk at Alleman High School, Rock Island and Pastoral Associate at St. Mary’s, Moline.  She had been a resident at St. Mary Monastery, Nauvoo, since 1992.

Sister was a member of the Sisters of St. Benedict, St. Mary Monastery, Nauvoo.

Survivors include one sister, Margaret Lynch, Monticello, Illinois, her Benedictine Sisters, one niece and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

A Christian wake service was held November 21 and funeral services were held November 22 at the St. Mary Monastery in Nauvoo, with Reverend Mark DeSutter officiating.  Burial was in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Nauvoo, Illinois with Barr Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.
