Sister Camilla Kennell, OSB, 1898-1995

Sister Camilla Irene Kennell, OSB, 97 years, died at 8:40 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at St. Mary Monastery, Nauvoo, Ill.

The daughter of Edward and Sophia Miller Kennell, Sr. Camilla was born March 4, 1898 at Metamora, Ill.  She entered religious life on June 6, 1923, making her first profession of vows on July 14, 1925 and her final profession on Aug. 28, 1928.

Sr. Camilla taught at St. Mary’s Academy, Nauvoo; St. Mary’s at Moline, Ill.; and Spalding at Peoria.  She retired from the classroom in 1969 but continued to tutor students, especially in mathematics.

She is survived by a brother, a sister-in-law, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The body of Sister Camilla Kennell lay in state at St. Mary Monastery Chapel after 4:30 p.m. Monday, where a Wake Service was conducted on Monday evening.  A Funeral Mass was conducted Tuesday morning, also in the Monastery Chapel, with Rev. Robert Maloy officiating, and burial in the Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Nauvoo.

Barr Memorial Chapel of Fort Madison was in charge of arrangements.
