Sister Maura DeSutter, OSB, 1898-1995

Sister Maura DeSutter, OSB, 96, of St. Mary Monastery in Nauvoo, Ill., died at 6:25 a.m. Friday, May 12, 1995, at the monastery.

Born June 3, 1898, in Sluis, Belgium, she was the daughter of Francis and Virginia Carton DeSutter.

She came to Nauvoo, Ill., in 1918 and entered the Novitiate three days after her arrival.  She made her First Profession Aug. 10, 1920, and made her Final Profession Aug. 26, 1924.  She served in LaSalle, Ill., from 1921-1922; Moline, Ill., 1922-1923; Ohio, Ill., 1923-1924; Streator, Ill., 1925-1930; Peoria, Ill., 1937-1944; Wenona, Ill., 1944-1945; Bradford, Ill., 1945-1946; Moline, Ill., 1946-1955; St. Boniface in Peoria, 1955-1958; Moline, Ill. 1959-1961; and Nauvoo, from 1961 until her death.

Survivors include a sister-in-law; nieces and nephews; members of her Benedictine religious community.

Friends may call after 4:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Monastery Chapel in Nauvoo, Ill., where a vigil service will be at 7 p.m.

The funeral for Sister Maura will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Monastery Chapel, with the Revs. Paul Showalter and Eugene Lauer, OSB, officiating.  Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Nauvoo.
