Sister Charlotte Conklin, OSB, 1923-1994

Sister Charlotte Conklin, 70, St. Mary Priory, Nauvoo, Ill., died at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, 1994, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

She was born June 16, 1923, at Canton, Ill., the daughter of Charles F. and Eleanor Scanlon Conklin.  She entered religious life on September 10, 1941.  She had her reception July 27, 1942; her triennial vows on July 29, 1943; and her final vows on July 29, 1946.

Sister Charlotte graduated from Canton High in May 1941.  She graduated from St. Ambrose College, Davenport, in July 1961 with a B.A. degree in education and a minor in English and philosophy.  She attended the University of Illinois and received her master’s degree in education in August 1969.

She taught at St. Johns, Bradford, Ill., in 1944 and 1957; at St. Mary’s-Seton School, Moline, Ill., in 1945-46 and 1979-80; at St. Roch, LaSalle, Ill., in 1947 and and 1964-68; at Immaculate Conception, Monmouth, Ill., in 1948-49, 1952 and 1978-82; at St. Boniface, Peoria, Ill., in 1950-51; at St. Columba, Chicago, Ill., in 1953 and 1960-63; at St. Thomas More, Munster, Ind., in 1954-56 and 1958; at St. Marys, Wenona, Ill., in 1959; and was chaplain at St. Mary’s Hospital in Quincy, Ill., from 1984-1993.  Survivors include one brother, Stephen Francis Conklin, Canton, Ill., two sisters, Mary Rose (Mrs. Franklin) Spalding, Peoria, Ill., and Regina (Mrs. A.J.) Henseler, Canton, Ill., and several nieces and nephews.

Her body will lie in state at St. Mary Priory Chapel after 4:30 p.m Friday, with a vigil service at the chapel at 7 p.m. Friday evening.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Priory with Rev. Jerry Scanlan officiating.  Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Nauvoo, Ill.
