Sister Gabriel Sloan, O.S.B., 1910-1990

Sister Gabriel Sloan, O.S.B., 79, of the St. Mary Priory, Nauvoo, Ill., died at 1:57 a.m. Sunday, April 22, 1990, at the priory.

Born April 24, 1910, in Ivesdale, Ill., she was the daughter of Felix and Mary Sherlock Sloan.

She entered religious life in September 1927 and made final profession on July 6, 1932.  She celebrated 60 years of religious commitment in 1989.  She taught grade school at Sts. Peter and Paul School in Nauvoo, Ill., St. John School in Clinton, Ill., and St. Boniface School in Peoria, Ill.  She taught high school at St. Mary High School In Moline, Ill., Alleman High School in Rock Island, Ill., and St. Mary Academy in Nauvoo, Ill.  She was active with the Nauvoo Senior Citizens and was secretary for the Senior Citizens Club of Nauvoo for three years.  She received the R.S.V.P. award for eight consecutive years of service.

Surviving are two sisters, Sr. Philomena Sloan, OSB., Nauvoo, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Hanna, Maywood, Ill.; her Benedictine Sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

The body has been donated to medical science through the Demonstrators Association of Illinois.

Friends of Sister Gabriel are invited to a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Thursday and a memorial mass at 4:00 p.m. Friday at the St. Mary Priory Chapel, Nauvoo, Ill.  The Revs. Paul Showalter and John Wissing will officiate.
